PGA West Region Event

This week the first OoM PGA West Region Event is being held at Oake Manor GC, Paul will be playing so good luck to him, next week sees Paul & Carl trying to qualify for the PGA Better ball championships, they have been successful in qualifying for the previous two years so lets hope they can do three in a row.

We are hosting fitting nights again this year the first 2 are Cobra 7th June 3 pm – 7 pm ½ slots. The second is Titleist 20th June 3 – 7 pm ½ slots.

Bailey Development Cup

Congratulations to Mike Hanwell who won the Bailey Development Cup with a fine score of 5 up in this perpetual bogey comp, good luck with your new handicap. The day before in the club medal the 3 division winners were Terry Vater Nett 67, Ian Lourence Nett 70 & Dave Smith Nett 71, well done guys.

Ryder Cup hopefuls staking their claim

The final leaderboard at last week’s Italian Open made for interesting reading. Home favourite Francesco Molinari was attempting back-to-back victories after his previous week’s triumph at Wentworth but had to settle for second place, one behind Thorbjørn Olesen who captured his fifth European Tour title in the process. Both golfers will have their eyes firmly set on a place in Europe’s Ryder Cup team come September as well as several top-10 finishers from the Italian Open such as Cabrera-Bello, Sullivan, Poulter and Willett.

Someone else looking to compete in Paris is young American Bryson DeChambeau who conjured up a timely victory at the Memorial Tournament. There were several stories at the beginning of the week including Justin Rose’s opportunity to rise to the top of the world rankings with a win (he finished T6) and Tiger Woods’ latest event of his eye-catching comeback (he led the field in several tee-to-green categories but faced putting woes throughout the week to end up six shots back), but DeChambeau stole the headlines with his playoff win to secure PGA title number two.

Fairway wood off the deck

Being able to launch your fairway wood off the ground is a great attribute to have, especially when it comes to reaching those long par-4s and short par-5s. However, we know some of you struggle with this shot, so here is a simple drill to help turn things around.

Swing shallow to launch it high
Fairway woods are long and low lofted, which makes them tricky to get airborne. Many amateurs we teach lean back through impact in an effort to lift the ball up, but this typically results in a low strike on the club face and a weak, low ball flight.

Instead, try to brush the turf in front of your ball through impact. This will encourage you to keep your chest down longer, which can help you find the centre of the face and launch shots higher in the air. If you’re struggling to achieve this shallow swing action, try placing a glove around six inches in front of your ball and swing towards it after impact, as above.

Adjustability? So what...

From changeable hosels to sliding weights, drivers have never been as adjustable as they are today. But how does this benefit you? Read on to find out what you have to gain from playing an adjustable driver.

Personalise your launch
This Srixon Z 565 driver features lots of adjustable hosel settings. For starters we can increase your loft by 1 or 2 degrees to help optimise your launch and trajectory for longer drives.

Shot shape control
Using the hosel we can also alter the lie angle from standard to 2 degrees upright and the face angle from 2 degrees closed to 2 degrees open to give you better accuracy, distance and control.

Don't outgrow your driver
If you’re planning on improving your technique and making swing changes, having an adjustable driver that you can alter to suit your new swing is much cheaper than forking out for a new model.
