Pro's news

All-important bragging rights...

Last week Alex and I played in the 2nd event of the Dorset & Wiltshire PGA winter series at Broadstone GC where 25 Professionals teed it up in the cold and windy conditions.

Alex played solidly again and if it wasn’t for a poor finish dropping 5 shots coming in, he may have returned another sub par round, but in the end he signed for a +4 74 and tied 7th position.

I found some better form, however, two sloppy 3 putts on 16 and 18 saw me return a score of +1, 71 for solo 3rd position, but most importantly the bragging rights back in the shop.

This week’s event at Chippenham GC was cancelled due to weather so we move on to Rushmore GC on the 18th and will keep you updated with the results.

Club news

Social events...

Another successful quiz night was hosted by Steve Sanger with fantastic food served by the Clubhouse 1896 team. Well done to the members for supporting the event and all who were involved for organising.

The next theme night is Curry Night on Saturday 16th November at £15 per head, but places are limited so please book at the bar to guarantee your seat.

 
Competition news

Alan goes low...

Saturday's competititon was cancelled due to the horrendous weather, but Sunday saw the 1st of the Fun Winter Pairs Comps as 26 pairs entered into this Betterball Stableford. There was some fine scoring on the day with lots of scores in the 40s.

Runner-up pairing was my Assistant Alex and the on-fire Alan Makovecz who scored 48 points. Alan plays of an 8hcp, but he was 5 under par gross standing on the 14th tee, eventually signing for a gross 69. If he had a partner maybe an obscene score in the mid 50’s was achievable. Well played Al.

Winning on countback also with an impressive 48 points was the pairing of Julian Flower & Ian Spalding as both played roughly to their handicap, so just shows what fantastic dove-tailing can achieve. Well done boys.

It's a fair old way

We don’t mean to be gloomy but winter golf can be a little disheartening for several reasons, but none more so than hitting the ball considerably shorter than in summer. A combination of the ball not rolling out as much and it not flying as far through the air results in shorter drives and longer approach shots; so, what’s the best way to deal with it?

Winter vs Summer

First of all, we need to accept that we're going to have to go up a club or two during winter.

We will all find ourselves further back on the fairway than during peak season, which means that you might need to hit a fairway wood off the deck to reach the green.

Fairway woods have been designed to be a lot easier to hit than a decade ago. Take this beauty from Srixon as an example, which has been engineered to launch the ball from the deck with ease.

It can be a tricky shot to play but with the right hardware and technique, we'll have you hitting greens for fun this winter.
