Welcome to this week's newsletter bringing you an update on the pro shop battle between Alex and I, a look at all the new products to land in-store as well as new of our first fitting day... Enjoy the read.

Pro's news

Could Alex catch more ground...

On Monday Alex and I played in the latest instalment of the Dorset & Wilts PGA Winter series. This event was held at a blustery but dry Upavon Golf Club.

As you are all aware the Order of merit drawing to an end, and Alex had closed the gap on me for the final Dorset team spot. We were actually paired together for this event which was nice. Since joining me as an Assistant just over a year ago it has been great to see Alex’s game steadily improve and after 8 holes he was one shot better than me with both of us playing some good golf in the tricky conditions.

But unfortunately an errand tee shot on the 9th led to a quadruple bogey for Alex which also caused a lapse in concentration over the next few holes and further dropped shots allowing the Old retired boss to pull further away in the standings. I eventually signed for a disappointing 74 with 5 missed putts from inside 5ft but I suppose that’s winter golf, placing me 6th in the individual and Alex finished 12th.

We both remain 2nd and 3rd in the overall Order of Merit going into the next event at Ogborne Downs Golf Club on Monday.

Competition news

Rain, rain, go away...

Due to more of the wet stuff no competitions were played at the weekend, so let’s hope for a dry end to the week so that the scheduled Saturday Stableford and Sunday Pairs combined can be played and your name can be up in lights in next week’s newsletter.

Upcoming events

The annual friendly match between the clubs Hardy Teams is down to be played on the 21st of March, so we wish them luck for their coming seasons, please remember to let your captains know or tick your names off for availability.

The Bridport Bowl requires players for this 1st round fixture, this event is for the over 50’s and a sign up sheet is available for you if you are interested.

The Mixed events are also on the board, these are great fun events are always well supported as well as looking new players to join in. Please see the notice board for full details.

Fitting news

First of the year...

We have the 1st of the year's fitting days on Tuesday 24th March from 2pm to 6pm run by COBRA who will have their latest products for you to try.

Special offers will be available on the day. Please phone or pop into the shop to book your 30min slot.

This year we will be charging a small fee for this service which will be credited to your account or taken off the already discounted price should you want to order on the day.

The art of putting

‘Drive for show, putt for dough’. No doubt you have heard this one a few times before but considering putting equates to between 30 to 50% of our shots on the course, it also has a large element of truth in it.

The whole puzzle

If you're considering buying new irons this year, have a think about how they are going to blend into the rest of your set. The idea is to have equal yardage gaps between each club in your bag so, if you are going to treat yourself, it might be worth replacing a long iron with a hybrid that is easier to hit.

Take danger out of play

The illustration here is a good example of where a hybrid comes in handy. When our driver brings danger into play and a long-iron leaves us too far to the green, a hybrid is the perfect option.
