Golf on Tour

Bryson's dominance continues

Austin Ernst stormed to victory at the LPGA Drive On Championship, going wire-to-wire to finish on -15 and cruise past Jennifer Kupcho by five strokes, despite the 2019 Augusta National Women’s Amateur Champion’s 72nd hole eagle.

Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau was anything but cruising as Lee Westwood forced a straight shoot-out on Sunday at the Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Invitational. The American was victorious, though, thanks in part to driving 370+ yards over a lake on the par-5 sixth hole on both Saturday and Sunday. Talk about entertainment!

The golfer's new clothes

Then & now!

Whenever a brand new driver comes out, it’s hard to imagine things getting any better. There have been some incredible innovations in recent years and who’s to say where we’ll be in 15 years? Why don’t we take a deeper dive into how old drivers compare to the latest models?

Cleveland drivers from then vs. now

If we take Cleveland as an example, we can look at the Launcher Titanium driver from the early 2000s – a favourite both on Tour and with weekend golfers - compared to the most recent Cleveland Launcher HB Turbo driver. The Titanium body and thin Beta-Titanium face of the old model really helped bring distance to both Tour and amateur golfers.

But the Launcher HB Turbo really blows this out the water, with a Turbocharged Cup Face to generate more speed at impact and, therefore, more distance than ever before. The low centre of gravity and deep weighting in the HiBore Crown also gives you far, far easier launch with more forgiveness than our old friend the Launcher Titanium.

When it comes to the spin we generate around the greens, is it really as simple as saying fresh grooves/wedges spin more than old/worn ones? And, if so, where does that fine-line sit between our wedges giving us the spin we need and when we need to think about replacing them?
